Are we smarter than a bunch of 5th graders? Marion and Sloan Moore were brainstorming while on vacation recently about how to celebrate our 30th year in business, and came up with sponsoring an essay contest for Orangeburg County 5th graders. With the stresses of modern-day life, we as adults may not always take the time to truly appreciate what we have here in Orangeburg, to “stop and smell the roses” so to speak. Our Sales Associates, staff, school guidance counselors and the staff of the Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce all jumped on board with the project. The topic given to over 650 fifth-grade students to write 100-word essays on was “I love living in Orangeburg County because… .” Our distinguished panel of essay judges included Catherine Hay, Drexel Ball and Cathy Hughes. The top 50+ essayists and their parents, along with our friends and associates, were invited to our 30th Anniversary Celebration picnic on our grounds on October 21st. A fantastic time was had by all.
The top 3 winners each received Kindle Fire HD tablets, and we made donations to their schools in their honor of $250, $500 and $1,000. Sarah Tant of Orangeburg Prep took 3rd place honors, Christina Williams of Sheridan Elementary garnered 2nd place, and Amanda Hezekiah of Whittaker Elementary was our 1st place winner. Marion Moore wanted to glean a fresh new phrase, or tagline if you will, from the students’ thoughts to help promote how we all feel about living in Orangeburg, and we found it in Amanda’s first-place entry: “Orangeburg – It even sounds delicious!” So no, we’re not smarter than a bunch of 5th graders!
